"Burn and I've Seen Rain" Lyrics

"Just yesterday morning, they allow me know you were gone.
Susanne, the plans they made put an end to you lot.
I walked out this morning time, and I wrote downwards this song,
I just can't retrieve who to transport information technology to.

I've seen burn down and I've seen pelting;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen lonely times when I could not observe a friend,
Only I always thought that I'd come across you once again.

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus;
You've got to help me brand a stand,;
You've only got to come across me through another day.
My torso'due south aching and my time is at mitt,
And I won't make information technology any other way.

Oh, I've seen burn down, and I've seen rain;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end;
I've seen solitary times when I could not find a friend,
Only I always thought that I'd come across yous again.

Been walking my mind to an like shooting fish in a barrel time, my back turned towards the sunday;
Lord knows, when the common cold wind blows information technology'll plow your head around.
Well, in that location'southward hours of time on the telephone line to talk nigh things to come;
Sweet dreams and flight machines in pieces on the ground.

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain;
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never stop;
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more than time again, now.

Thought I'd see you i more time once again;
In that location's just a few things coming my way this time around, now;
Thought I'd encounter you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now."

James Taylor Lyrics Explained

James Taylor wrote and sang this song, which was inspired by a friend who died. After being recorded, this song elevated him to a pop star at 22 when it became a striking.

Taylor stated that he wrote this song iii unlike times throughout 1968. His writing began while auditioning in London for The Beatles' Apple Records. Then Taylor wrote more of information technology while he stayed in a Manhattan Hospital. All the same, he finished it at the Austin Riggs Center, where he was staying for drug rehabilitation. In 1972 Taylor stated:

"Fire and Rain" has three verses. The commencement verse is about my reactions to the death of a friend. The second verse is about my arrival in this land with a monkey on my back, and there Jesus is an expression of my desperation in trying to get through the time when my trunk was aching and the time was at hand when I had to do it... And the 3rd verse of that song refers to my recuperation in Austin Riggs which lasted about five months.

Although he wrote this at simply twenty years former, information technology touches people of all ages and is still relevant 40-plus years afterward.

Starting time Poesy Explained

"Simply yesterday morning they let me know y'all were gone
I just tin can't remember who to send it to
Susanne the plans they fabricated put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this vocal"

When he refers to Susanne, he is referring to Susanne Schnerr. Taylor states he used to get loftier with her and knew her quite well. He met her in New York in 1967 and hung out with her quite often when he was part of a group called The Flight Machine. The Flying Machine was the group where he became successful as a musician and writer.

Susanne, or who Taylor affectionately refers to every bit Suzie, committed suicide. He was living in London with common friends. Since his career began lifting off and his fame grew, his friends waited until later to requite him the news since they knew Taylor was so excited about his upcoming record deal. He didn't observe out almost her suicide until 6 months later.

He also states in i interview that he e'er felt bad about the line, "The plans they made put an end to you," because people take made assumptions near whom "they" are. He intended 'they' to be the Fates. His greatest fearfulness was that her parents thought he blamed them. He did not.

Second Verse Explained

"Won't you look downward upon me, Jesus
You've got to aid me brand a stand up
You've merely got to meet me through another twenty-four hour period
My body's agonized and my time is at hand
And I won't make information technology any other mode"

He wrote this verse in 1968 subsequently he stayed in a mental hospital. He was contesting a heroin addiction. He wrote this as a plea to Jesus, as in Jesus Christ, to help him 'make a stand up' against his drug addiction, which portrays how much of a hold the habit had on him. He makes the hold the addiction had on him when he belts out, "I won't brand it whatever other manner."

Although information technology would be nice to say that in 1968, he finally kicked the habit, he did non kick the habit until much after. Fortunately, unlike many like him, he was finally able to make a stand against his addiction in 1986, when he became sober. He has been sober always since but still feels that he is a recovering addict.

Third Poetry Explained

"Has been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the dominicus
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll plow your head around
Well, at that place's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
To come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground"

Earlier, during his senior year in high school, he had been treated at a hospital for depression. He and a friend, Danny Kortchmar, began a ring called the Flight Machine. It was a approving in disguise when the group failed just a few months after starting, and he started his solo career. The terminal line refers to this ring and his earlier attempts at finding success as a author.

Fire and Rain Pregnant

Fire and Rain remains and probably always will be i of my favorite songs. It touches me on a deep level. Although I've never experienced depression or drug addiction, I still know how information technology feels to exist on the bottom, hoping for a moment to arise. Life is like a roller coaster, with many ups and downs, scary at times, exhilarating, and sometimes only evidently abrasive.

He has such a distinctive vox, you can always tell it's him when he helps out a friend or even plays an instrument. He plays the banjo part on Neil Young's Old Human. I wish he stayed with Carly Simon, she loved him and so much.

He really is quite the genius, he is one of my all time favorite singers.

Winsome from Southern California past mode of Texas on June 02, 2012:

Hi A_M, thank you for that explanation. I had no idea he wrote the verses and so far apart. I only finished a song I started many years agone, so I do empathise how that happens. I read once that when he heard people say that his songs all sounded the same that he was surprised. He said he works to vary his songs and structure of the music but that he simply has a narrow lens they all come up out of and and so it just sounds similar that.

I agree with him, his songs are not as easy to play as you might think if you really play them as he does. That's a chip of genius there. =:)

Angela Michelle Schultz (author) from United states on May nineteen, 2012:

It truly is a sad story. My heart feels heavy every time I hear those words.

When lyrics, melody, and emotion collide, you take a classic - something that never grows former. James is in (what I would call) the third human action of his career now but he still sings and plays with the same fervor of his early days. I still love to hear him sing

Coffeesnob, ane thing I discover very interesting is that many performers will say they have a normal personality, then they have a stage personality. James Taylor actually stated in an interview that he is himself in his music. He acted as if that was not very creative and he lacked imagination, just personally I recollect it's kind of refreshing.
